Additional Endodontic Procedures

Vital Pulp Therapy

Vital pulp therapy is a dental treatment aimed at preserving the health and function of the pulp (the innermost part of a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) in a tooth that has been compromised but not irreversibly damaged.

The goal is to allow the tooth to heal and maintain its vitality, thereby avoiding more invasive treatments, like root canal therapy. Common techniques in vital pulp therapy include direct pulp capping, indirect pulp capping, and pulpotomy.

Pulpotomy

The blood vessels, nerves, and tissue that keep a tooth healthy and alive are located in the tooth’s pulp, which is protected by the outer enamel and tooth structure. Sometimes the pulp can become infected. The infected pulp can be removed with a pulpotomy. Because this procedure is often performed on deciduous (baby) teeth, it is sometimes referred to as a baby root canal.

Regenerative Endodontics

Regenerative endodontics is a specialized procedure that focuses on regenerating the pulp tissue inside a tooth that has been affected by trauma or decay. Unlike traditional root canal therapy, which removes the infected pulp entirely, regenerative endodontics facilitates the body’s natural healing processes to restore the tooth’s vitality and function.

This minimally invasive technique is particularly beneficial for younger patients whose teeth are still developing, as it promotes continued root growth and strengthens the tooth structure. However, adults with eligible cases can also benefit from this treatment.

Root Resorption

Tooth root resorption is when the tissue of a tooth’s root starts breaking down and dissolving, often due to injury or disease. This can lead to tooth instability or loss if not treated.

Endodontic Procedures in Cambridge, MA: FAQs

What is a root canal treatment, and why is it needed?

Root canal treatment is an endodontic procedure used to treat tooth infections by removing the infected tissue from inside the infected tooth. This procedure is essential for saving teeth that are affected by bacterial infections or inner tooth damage. The goal is to eliminate oral bacteria, prevent the spread of infection, and preserve the natural tooth for long-term dental health. After the infection is removed, a temporary filling is placed until a permanent restoration like a crown is applied.

How is a root canal procedure performed?

During a root canal procedure, your dentist will use advanced technology to carefully clean the affected tooth and remove the infected tissue. A dental dam, which is a protective sheet, is placed to isolate the tooth and keep the area dry during the treatment. X-rays are taken to assess the extent of the damage, and local anesthesia is used to ensure you're comfortable throughout the process. After cleaning the inner tooth, the tooth is sealed with gutta percha, a rubber-like material, to prevent future infection and protect the tooth.

What happens if I don't treat tooth infections or damage?

If tooth infections or tooth damage are left untreated, the infection can spread, leading to more serious complications like abscesses, swelling, and severe pain. In some cases, it may result in the need for tooth extraction. Prompt care is necessary to prevent further damage and to avoid future infections that could compromise your dental health and overall well-being. Endodontic retreatment or even endodontic microsurgery may be needed to address complex cases of untreated infections.

How long does it take to recover from an endodontic procedure?

Recovery time after an endodontic procedure varies depending on the complexity of the case. Most patients experience some discomfort or sensitivity after the procedure, but this typically subsides within a few days. Your dentist will provide specific instructions to help you manage any pain and avoid complications during the healing process. Local anesthetic and sedation options are available to ensure a comfortable experience during and after the procedure. A final visit will be scheduled to place a permanent restoration, like a crown, to protect the tooth.

How can I prevent future infection or complications after a root canal?

To prevent complications after a root canal procedure, it’s important to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions carefully. This may include avoiding hard foods, practicing good oral hygiene, and attending regular dental visits. Maintaining long-term dental health with preventive care will help ensure the success of your treatment and reduce the risk of new decay or infection. Your dentist will also monitor the treated tooth with X-rays during follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and protect against further damage.
